Oct. 26 support group to learn about continuous glucose monitors

KENDALLVILLE, IND. – Oct. 19, 2023 – Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices are changing life for many people who have diabetes.

The devices drastically reduce the need for painful fingersticks to check blood sugar, or blood glucose. With a sensor inserted just under a person’s skin, a CGM can monitor the person’s glucose levels around the clock and provide alerts when those levels are too low or too high. Extreme swings in blood sugar levels can be life-threatening and require immediate action.

Find out what you should know about CGMs when you join Terri Clark, RN, certified diabetes and education specialist, Parkview Noble Hospital, at the Oct. 26 meeting of the Parkview Noble Center for Healthy Living’s Diabetes Support Group. Clark will have the devices on hand so participants can see what they look like and gain an understanding of how they work and the benefits they can provide.

Managing diabetes – a chronic condition – takes a multifaceted approach to regulating blood sugar through diet, medications, exercise and other lifestyle modifications. While a CGM may not be right for every person who is managing their diabetes, it’s worthwhile to understand the CGM as an available tool.

Anyone seeking support and information for living better with diabetes is welcome to attend the monthly meetings of the Diabetes Support Group, which is facilitated by Clark and takes place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at The Community Learning Center, 401 Diamond St. in Kendallville.

Support group meetings are free, but registration in advance is required. Please call the Parkview Center for Healthy Living at 260-347-8125 to register.
