Focused Ultrasound

Focused ultrasound treatment for essential tremor

If you are living with essential tremor and have not responded to medication, focused ultrasound is an incision-free, non-invasive outpatient procedure that may help reduce your symptoms.

Focused ultrasound uses sound waves guided by MRI to precisely target and ablate tissue without incisions or permanent implants. The ultrasound waves are focused on the area of the brain that is considered responsible for causing tremors, the Vim of the thalamus. This treatment method presents little to no risk of infection and patients go home the same day.

The interdisciplinary care team of the Parkview Movement Disorders clinic care team includes neurologists and neurosurgeons who specialize in movement disorders, as well as other dedicated clinical team members. The care team assesses each person’s specific goals and needs and together plans an individualized course of treatment.

Your neurologist can determine if focused ultrasound is right for you.

Not everyone is a good candidate for focused ultrasound treatment. People who have newly developed essential tremor usually are not good candidates for this procedure. Your neurologist will discuss all essential tremor treatment options to help you determine the best care plan for you.
